Clare Haughey MSP proudly represents the Rutherglen Constituency which takes in the towns of Blantyre, Cambuslang and Rutherglen itself. Clare was born in the constituency and still lives there today.
Prior to becoming an MSP, Clare was a mental health nurse for 30 years, specialising in perinatal mental health – issues before, after and during pregnancy. As part of this, she helped set up Scotland’s first Mother and Baby Unit in Glasgow in 2004 as clinical nurse manager.
Clare is also passionate about workers’ rights. She has been an active trade unionist and was previously a Divisional Convener at Unison.
As an MSP, Clare continues to fight against sharp practice by employers and the Tory government at Westminster which has imposed anti-trade union legislation and has failed to ban Fire and Rehire practices.
Clare is a strong advocate of an independent Scotland re-joining the EU in order to, among other things, enhance and uphold workers’ protections.
Since her election in 2016, she has held the roles of Minister for Mental Health, Minister for Children and Young People, and is currently the Scottish Parliament’s Convener of the Health, Social Care, and Sport Committee.
In 2021, Clare was re-elected on an increased turnout, with an increased majority.
